The southern right whale can grow to 17 m long and weigh 80 tonnes. Slow swimmers who come close inshore to calve, by the late 19th century Australian stocks had been brought close to extinction by shore-based whalers. Like the more active humpback, their trusting nature gives them pin-up status in the Australian whale-watching industry.
